Update on UTHealth Device

Scientists at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) have developed a device that measures coagulation parameters within a sample of clotting blood. Dr. Charles S. Cox, Jr, Dr. Brijesh Gill, and Kevin Aroom, scientists at UTHealth developed the device to allow the administration of bedside coagulation tests and reduce unnecessary blood transfusions. RWJF Announces $120,000 Challenge

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) just launched a competition among technology developers to improve consumer understanding by using of data to compare hospital prices. Winners of the “RWJF Hospital Price Transparency Challenge” will share $120,000 in prize money. Winners of the visualization component of the challenge will be announced at the Health 2.0 Fall Conference in October 2013. The deadline for submissions is August 25, 2013. (more…)

NIHCM Foundation Seek LOIs

The National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation is accepting Letters of Inquiry (LOI) for research projects with the potential to improve the U.S. healthcare system. Through their research grant program, the Foundation will award up to $150,000 in two or three grants. (more…)

POWERDOT Wins $500,000

Heritage Provider Network (HPN) will continue to award their $3 million Heritage Health Prize as announced at the Health Datapalooza Forum held in Washington D.C on June 3-4, 2013. So far, this big data challenge has attracted more than 30,000 entries worldwide as teams of data scientists have worked to develop models using health industry data. The big data Heritage Health Prize is aimed at tackling the nearly $40 billion the nation spends on avoidable hospitalizations. (more…)
