In recent years, North Carolina faced high Emergency Department (ED) admissions related to an increase in behavioral health issues. It has been reported by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) that more than 25 percent of individuals experiencing mental health crises that were admitted to EDs, return to the ED within 30 days. Canada’s e-Health Innovations Program

States to Share Medicaid Technology
The states of Michigan and Illinois have created an interstate alliance to enable Illinois to access Michigan’s Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) as a shared cloud-based service. The Illinois MMIS is more than 30 years old and the state has been working on an economical way to implement a replacement system. Through the Illinois Michigan Program Alliance for Core Technology (IMPACT) project, Illinois will be able to modernize its outdated MMIS system. (more…)
CalOHII Issues Request for Application
The California Office of Health Information Integrity (CalOHII) released a Request for Applications (RFA) on August 29th for their “HIE Personal Health Records Pilot Project 2013”. The RFA seeks applications from qualified entities to participate in a five month electronic personal health record pilot project. Currently nothing exists to help providers evaluate the trustworthiness of Personal Health Records (PHR) when care is delivered. (more…)
NSF Awards $20 Million
The National Science Foundation recently awarded three large Frontier awards involving health and wellness, security, and effective web privacy totaling nearly $20 million. The funding will go to support collaborative multi-university research and education activities. The three Frontier projects are part of more than 110 new cybersecurity research projects being funded in 33 states with award amounts ranging from $100,000 to $10 million. (more…)
Alaska’s SHARP Program
Alaska’s SHARP program seeks to recruit and retain selected healthcare professionals to serve in designated healthcare shortage areas in exchange for the repayment of qualifying education loans. Selected healthcare practitioners sign a three year contract stating their commitment to serve in identified high need areas and facilities. (more…)
Tools to Handle Big Data
The Obama Administration announced a “National Big Data Research and Development Initiative” in March 2012. At that time six federal departments and agencies promised more than $200 million in new commitments to improve and develop the tools, techniques, and human capital needed to move from data to knowledge to action.
