Canada’s e-Health Innovations Program

The Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) in partnership with the CIHR Institute of Aging, and the International Development Research Centre have announced funding for their e-Health Innovations (2013) program to support more efficient population and individualized healthcare in Canada.

The funding will enable e-Health innovations to be used to empower patients as partners in their care. The proposed research should demonstrate the potential impact related to access to care, quality, increasing efficiency, and expanding access in relevant research areas. The research can involve engaging with innovative micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises and demonstrate how to build new international partnerships.

Funding for the e-Health Innovations program is subject to the availability of funds. The total amount available is $1,100,000. This is enough to fund eleven grants but this amount may increase if additional funding partners participate.

Of the $1,100,000, $600,000 is available to fund applications relevant to the CIHR Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (the principal applicant must be an independent researcher at an eligible institution), $400,000 is available to fund applications relevant to the CIHR Institute of Aging, and $100,000 is available to fund applications relevant to the International Development Research Centre (Principal applicant must be from a LMIC country as defined by the World Bank).

The relevant research areas should provide for:

  •  Patient-centered e-Health so that patients will be able to manage chronic conditions and improve their health
  • Development of new generation health professional decision-support tools to enable individualized care
  • Development of new tools to monitor population health
  • Development of integrated solutions to support personal and population-based care
  • Exploration of ICTs in health information systems, delivery systems and policy processes and analysis
