STSI Studying mHealth Devices

Researchers at the Scripps Translational Science Institute (STSI) led by digital health pioneer Dr. Eric Topol along with collaborators Qualcomm Life, HealthComp, and Accenture have launched “Wired for Health”. This clinical study is aimed at evaluating whether the integration of wireless technologies, online social networks, and medicine have a direct effect on healthcare spending and may help to lower costs. FDA Grants Market Clearance

FDA has granted Alere™ Connect a 510 (k) market clearance for their “Alere MobileLink” and also cleared the device for over-the-counter use with other FDA cleared devices including blood pressure monitors, glucose meters and weight scales. The “Alere MobileLink” also recently received CE Mark certification to allow the product to be marketed in Europe and in the U.S later this year. (more…)

Calibrating Hospital CAT Scanners

Millions of CAT scans take place every year in the U.S alone, but over time the outputs from the devices have a tendency to “drift” according to NIST physicist Zachary Levine. .Scientists at NIST have developed a new Standard Reference Material (SRM) that would enable hospitals to link important tissue density measurements made by CAT scans to international standards. DxUpClose Receives Funding

The Texas Emerging Technology Fund (TETF) has awarded two early stage companies funding to further develop and commercialize groundbreaking technologies. One of the companies, Telemedicine Up Close a Frisco-based company operating as DxUpClose Inc. received $280,000 for up to $1.5 million to commercialize a rapid and low cost bacteria diagnostic kit that would be able to identify bacterial infections and determine optimal antibiotic treatment. The technology developed by Rheonix for the molecular diagnostics market includes the Rheonix CARD®, a disposable cartridge that can run multiple samples simultaneously without user intervention. North Carolina Recruits Providers

Efforts made by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to recruit physicians to underserved areas of the state has brought in a record 160 primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and dentists over the past year surpassing estimates for the department’s medical placement services initiative.  (more…)
