HHS has launched an online resource to help healthcare providers effectively engage patients in choosing how they want their electronic patient health information shared. Known as Meaningful Consent, the site addresses the laws, policies, and issues related to the electronic exchange of health information utilizing a health information exchange. (more…)

Telehealth to Help Deliver Care

Families with children in need of psychiatric help in Alabama’s DeKalb County now have more options when seeking mental health services. On September 13, 2013, Governor Robert Bentley announced that funding was made available through a $50,000 grant award from the Appalachian Regional Commission along with matching funds of $23,000 to provide new telehealth services. Grants Focus on DNA Sequencing

The use of nanopore technology aimed at more accurate and efficient DNA sequencing is the focus for grants recently awarded by NIH’s National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI. The eight grants totaling nearly $17 million were made through NHGRI’s Advanced DNA Sequencing Technology Awards for 2013.  (more…)

Developing New Born Screening Device

New born screening is being done to screen infants shortly after birth for conditions that may be treatable but are not yet clinically evident when doctors are examining newborns. Several conditions are only detectable after the infant becomes very ill and may even die. (more…)

Devices Designed to Save Lives

In April 2013, ZOLL Medical entered into an agreement with Reflectance Medical Inc. (RMI) to develop and market a ruggedized version of the Mobile CareGuide 3100, a sensor enabling medical personnel to obtain tissue measurements of oxygen and pH without a blood sample so that patients that are about to go into shock can be identified.
