The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) have reviewed their report “Better Health Care and Lower Costs: Accelerating Improvement through Systems Engineering”. Systems engineering widely used in manufacturing and aviation is an interdisciplinary approach to analyze design, manage, and measure a complex system to improve efficiency, reliability, productivity, quality, and safety. Projects Helping Disabled Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs “Center of Excellence for Rehabilitation Research and Development” houses the “Advanced Platform Technology” (APT) Center. The APT Center located at the Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center operates in partnership with Case Western Reserve University, and collaborates with clinicians and researchers at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Help for Kentucky’s Rural Areas

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and U.S Representative Hal Rodgers announced that two Requests for Proposals (RFP) issued in July, detail a public-private partnership (P3) project to build critically needed high speed broadband internet access to areas all over the state but especially focusing on Eastern Kentucky. Army’s Secure Messaging a Success

As of March 1, more than 234,000 Army Medicine healthcare beneficiaries and almost 3,000 Army providers have signed up for the Army Medicine Secure Messaging Service (AMSMS). The messaging service allows patients and providers across 52 Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) worldwide to communicate on a secure network regarding non-urgent healthcare concerns. (more…)

DOD & VA Healthcare Issues

The “Capitol Hill Steering Committee on Telehealth and Healthcare Informatics” briefing on July 9th sponsored by the Institute for e-Health Policy www.e-healthpolicy.org discussed vital health issues related to the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Speakers from the Defense Health Agency (DHA and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) commented on the many advances and challenges military medicine and the veterans’ healthcare systems face.
