NIBIB Seeks Tech to Measure BP

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) within NIH posted a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) on July 11, 2013, seeking technologies to measure blood pressure in low-resource settings in the U.S and India. NIBIB plans to commit $2 million in FY 2014 to fund up to three applications.  (more…)

FDA Permits Marketing of Brain Device

FDA allows marketing of the first medical device based on brain function to assess Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents 6 to 17 years old. ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders in childhood. According to the American Psychiatric Association, nine percent of adolescents in the U.S have ADHD. (more…)

SAMHSA Awards $750,000 in Grants

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded $750,000 in grants to enable opioid treatment programs to develop and use EHRs. These systems will enable opioid treatment programs to fulfill their regulatory requirements, achieve certified status, and become interoperable with other patient health record systems.  (more…)

Developing Implantable Computer

For the past eight years, NIH has funded researchers at Case Western Reserve University’s Functional Electrical Simulation Center (FSC) to help researchers test and commercialize a fully implantable computer network. The system will make it possible for a quadriplegic to move arms and legs, control breathing and bladder, coughs and much more.  (more…)

Preventing Prescription Drug Abuse

NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse on July 16th released a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) through their SBIR program, seeking ways to avoid the abuse, misuse, and diversion of prescription opioids by patients.
