DLT Grant Program Accepting Applications
The USDA Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program is now accepting grant applications. USDA’s Rural Utilities Service has made $19 million available for FY 2015 with minimum grant amounts of $50,000 and maximum amounts of $500,000 for FY 2015. (more…)
Devices To Test for Cancers
Although numerous drugs are available to treat cancers, determining which drugs to use can be challenging. As tumors grow, they often become resistant to treatments as cancer cells mutate quickly which can help them adapt and survive. U of Texas Receives Major Funding
The South Texas Diabetes and Obesity Institute (STDOI) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) www.utrgv.edu received an award for $4 million from the National Institute of Mental Health www.nimb.nih.gov to do a four year project to search for genes influencing psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, and major depression. Biologics are seven out of the top ten highest selling drugs in the U.S with treatments that can cost $100,000 or more per year for a patient. Gates Foundation Funds Global Network
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation www.gatesfoundation.org recently announced funding for $75 million to develop a new global health surveillance network to help prevent childhood mortality in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The network is expected to be a twenty year project initially at six sites, but eventually may be expanded to as many as 20 sites. (more…)
