The Federal Electronic Health Record Modernization (FEHRM) program office at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DOD) have launched a modernized health data sharing capability, in order to enable both departments to have the ability to securely exchange records with community healthcare partners.
The joint DOD and VA HIE enables providers in both departments to quickly and securely access EHR data for their patients that are seen by a participating community partner or health system. Also, participating community providers now have a single point of entry to request and access DOD and VA electronic health records to use when treating patients.
The joint HIE provides a platform for future interoperability expansion, that includes connecting to CommonWell, a network of more than 15,000 community providers which is expected to happen later this year.
