RFI Seeks Info on AI Standards

The Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) https://www.nist.gov has issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking information on technical standards and related tools for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The RFI was published in the Federal Register on May 1, 2019 in response to the February 11, 2019 “Executive Order on Maintaining American Leadership in AI”.

The Executive Order directs NIST to create a plan on how federal agencies can engage in developing standards and tools that will support reliable, robust and trustworthy systems using AI technologies.

To develop the plan, NIST will engage not only with other federal agencies, but also with the private sector, academic institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and other stakeholders with an interest and expertise in AI and related standards.

The RFI focuses on the status and plans for AI technical standards and related tools development, defining and achieving U.S leadership in AI standards, and prioritizing federal government engagement in AI standardization.

Information requested includes information on existing standards and tools, information on organizations currently addressing the need for standards, locations where the U.S is effectively leading standards development, and information on the unique needs of the federal government.
