More than 13 million people will benefit from a new project to help the health sector in Chile with funding to be provided by a U.S. 80 million loan that was recently approved by the Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank www.worldbank.org.
The “Public Health Sector Support Project” is going to use the funds to improve the efficiency and quality of public health especially for patients with non-communicable diseases in Chile.
Chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma and cancer is high among people 65 years or older has grown from 6 to 11 percent from the total obtained from 1990 to 2015.
“With this project, the World Bank will strengthen governance mechanisms in the Ministry of Health. By refocusing efforts and investments we will be able to achieve greater efficiency and health improvements among patients with non-communicable diseases” said, Alberto Rodriguez, World Bank Director for Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
The project’s funds will improve the integration of public health services by establishing management units to closely monitor chronic cases in hospitals and healthcare services, enable telemedicine services to reach more patients at their homes and in remote areas, and provide training for healthcare workers. Funds will also go to help improve the acquisition of medicines and medical supplies.
