Health Data Challenge Launched

On October 15th, the Health Data Consortium announced that the Merck Heritage Provider Network Innovation Challenge is open for submissions. Entrants will be eligible for a prize worth $240,000 in non-dilutive capital, access to industry mentorship, an invitation to attend a boot camp, and have the opportunity to participate in a mini-pilot.

The Challenge calls on entrepreneurs, data scientists, designers, healthcare providers, and big thinkers to create the products or services to support patients with diabetes and/or heart disease in order to adhere to their care plans.

For people living with chronic diseases, a care plan maps out critical recommendations around healthy behaviors, medication management, and nutrition. At the same time, the care plan can feel like a daunting regime with unattainable goals.

Submitted concepts should focus on human-centric opportunities to achieve health and wellness, draw on rich data sets to understand real-life behaviors of patients, and leverage the patient ecosystem to create novel methods for personalized support.

The Health Data Challenge Series moves beyond theoretical applications of big data to inform practical business solutions that will produce tangible improvements.

The Challenge will unfold with:

  • Five semi-finalists to be announced November 21, 2013 where each semi-finalist will receive $20,000 to further develop their concept in a Virtual Accelerator
  • Semi-finalists competing at a live Demo Day in New York City on January 23, 2014, with two finalists to be announced on January 27, 2014 where each will receive $20,000 to develop a prototype
  • Two finalists participating in a month long mini-pilot to test solutions with patients, to be facilitated by the Heritage Provider Network in February
  • The winner to be announced in mid-March and awarded $100,000
