Technology to Assess Sleep Health

NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) released the funding notice “Technologies to Assess Sleep Health Status in Populations” (RFA-HL-14-013) on September 13, 2013 seeking Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) applications.

NHLBI is looking for researchers to develop biomarker panels to do point-of-care assessments for individuals with sleep health issues. Some of the issues that need to be studied include sleep deprivation, chronic sleep deficiency, sleep disorders, and circadian rhythm abnormalities.

The purpose for the biomarker panel development research is to assess sleep health as it relates to health or safety. To find the answers, biomarkers need to measure characteristics that reflect the severity or presence of some disease state and can help in diagnosing medical and health issues early to prevent further health issues.

NHBLI intends to commit $450,000 total costs in FY 2014, $950,000 in FY 2015, $1,000,000 in FY 2016, and $500,000 in FY 2017. NHLBI intends to fund an estimated three new Phase I awards in FY 2014, three new Phase I awards and one new Phase II award in FY 2015, and one new Phase II award in FY 2016.

Letters of intent are due thirty days before the application is due on November 15, 2013 (Phase I only), November 14, 2014 for Phase 1 and Phase II, and November 13, 2015 for Phase II only.
