New Hypertension $50M Study

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) https://www.pcori.org an independent non-profit non-governmental organization, has been accepting proposals for a new study to compare health system strategies to improve hypertension outcomes for populations experiencing disparities.

Hypertension affects almost half of U.S. adults, with the highest prevalence among non-Hispanic Black men and women. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, chronic kidney disease and early mortality.

Despite hypertension’s treatability, most U.S adults with hypertension do not have their blood pressure under control, especially people of color, those without access to care or health insurance, and individuals living in rural areas.

Factors that may serve as barriers to blood pressure control include delayed identification of high risk patients, in sufficient linkage to treatment and services, or failure to initiate or intensify treatment when needed.

However, questions remain as to how to eliminate disparities in hypertension control and  the most effective way for health systems to integrate and communicate with community-based team members.

Questions on how to provide models for providing simplified pharmacotherapy regimes or free or low cost medications, how to improve provider patient communications and address discrimination in care delivery, and the impact of remote care delivery on the delivery of treatments, and clinical outcomes especially in in under research and under resourced populations.

PCORI is offering up to $50 million through this Funding Announcement. The Letter of Intent Deadline is June 1, 2022, and the application deadline is August 31, 2022.
