NIDDK Releases Two Funding Notices

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) on August 9th issued two Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA). The first Funding Announcement (RFA-DK -13-022) seeks to develop, refine, and pilot test innovative strategies to improve diabetes management in young children with Type 1 diabetes that are five years old and under. NIDDK intends to commit $8 million in FY 2014 to fund 3-4 awards.

The second Funding Announcement (RFA-DK-13-023) is looking for research support that will help produce good diabetes self-management in adults with Type 1 diabetes. The NIDKK funding is intended to be $5 million in FY 2014 to fund 1-2 awards.    Additional awards for both FOAs may be possible if the Special Diabetes Program for Type 1 Diabetes research is extended in FY 2015.

The FOAs are requesting interest in areas of research but applicants are not limited to specific areas. There are several research areas that involve the use of technology in both FOAs. Research is needed to enable the healthcare team to develop new and easy ways to communicate and also to develop health IT tools to improve diabetes self-management.

New or upgrades for existing technologies needed to further develop insulin pumps, blood glucose monitors, and Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems. There is a need to address nocturnal hypoglycemia with CGM systems that may be integrated in a low glucose suspend or closed loop systems.

As for specific research to help adults with diabetes, there is a need to understand healthcare team and healthcare system factors that influence provider-patient communications, new models of access to care, plus development of web and mobile health resources.

Eligible applicants can include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profits, governments, and others. The earliest submission date for the two FOAs is January 19, 2014 with the applications due February 19, 2014, with the earliest start date for the research to begin December 2014.
