The new NIH Common Fund Program Bridge to Artificial Intelligence (Bridge2AI) program https://commonfund.nih.gov/bridge2i is going to tap into the power of AI to lead the way towards insights that will be able to inform clinical decisions and individualize care.
The use of AI/ML modeling in biomedical and behavioral research is limited by the availability of well-defined data to train AI algorithms to recognize patterns within the data. Standardizing the collection process is challenging and requires new approaches and methods. Existing biomedical and behavioral data rarely includes all the necessary information.
Two Notices of Intent to Publish Funding Opportunity Notices (FOA) for the NIH Bridge2AI Program were released on April 8, 2021 with the estimated publication date for both funding opportunities to be June 11, 2021. Both proposal applications are due August 20, 2021.
The First Notice of Intent to Publish (NOT-RM-21-021) solicits applications for the Integration, Dissemination and Evaluation Center to integrate, disseminate, and evaluate datasets and cross cutting products across Bridge2Ai Data Generation Projects and develop best practices for the use of AI/ML.
The Second Notice of Intent to Publish (NOT-RM-21-022) announces NIH’s plans to solicit and publish Data Generation Projects for the NIH Bridge2AI Project to produce datasets for use in biomedical and behavioral science discoveries driven by AI/ML.
Deliverables for the Bridge2AI program includes:
- Creation of new biomedical and behavioral datasets
- Software to standardize data attributes across multiple data sources and across data types
- Automated tools to assist the creation of FAIR and ethically sourced datasets
- Resources to disseminate data, ethical principles, tools, and best practices
- Cross training materials and activities for workforce development that bridges the AI/ML and biomedical/behavioral research communities
Estimated total funding is to be determined for both NOT-RM-21021 and NOT-RM-21-022. Go to https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-RM-21-021.html and https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-RM-21-022.html for more information.
