President’s FY 22 Funding Request

In April, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) https://www.whitehouse.gov submitted the President’s discretionary funding request for FY 2022 to Congress which outlines some of the new proposals to:

  • Launch the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) -–The discretionary request calls for $6.5 billion to launch ARPA-H within NIH. The initial focus to be on cancer and other diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s
  • Help End the Opioid Epidemic—The request includes an investment of $10.7 billion, an increase of $3.9 billion over the 2021 enacted level, to support research, prevention, treatment, and recovery support services, along with targeted investments to support populations with unique needs, including Native Americans, older Americans, and rural populations
  • Improve readiness for Future Public Health Crises—The request includes $8.7 billion for CDC https://www.cdc.gov to restore capacity at the public health agency. Building on the investments in the American Rescue Plan,  CDC will use this additional funding to support core public health capacity improvements in States and Territories, modernize public health data collection nationwide, train new epidemiologists and other public health experts, and build international capacity to detect, prepare for, and respond to emerging global threats
  • Uphold Our Trust Responsibility to Tribal Nations—The request proposes to dramatically increase funding for the Indian Health Service https://www.ihs.gov by $2.2 billion and provide $900 million to fund tribal efforts to expand affordable housing, improve housing conditions, infrastructure, and increase economic opportunities for low-income families.
