FDA Approves New Insulin Pump

Medtronic https://medtronic.com headquartered in Dublin Ireland, has received FDA’s https://www.fda.gov approval for their MiniMed™ 770G hybrid closed loop system. This newest insulin pump system offers the company’s most advanced SmartGuard™ technology as featured in the MiniMed 670G system with the added benefit of being able to use smartphone connectivity for children as young as 2  to 6 years living with type 1 diabetes.

The MiniMed 770G System, a Bluetooth-enabled version is a hybrid closed loop system that works by measuring glucose levels in the body every five minutes and automatically adjusts insulin delivery by either administering or withholding insulin.

The system includes a sensor that attaches to the body to measure glucose levels under the skin. An insulin pump is trapped to the body and an infusion patch is connected to the pump with a catheter that delivers insulin.

The goal for delivering automated background insulin is to maximize the time glucose levels are within the optimal target range. This is done in order to minimize both high and low glucose levels by using a mobile app that is compatible with both iPhone and Android and comes with the Roche Accu-Chek Guide Link meter which is Bluetooth compatible for improved usability.
