DOD’s Response to COVID-19

The Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov March 31, 2020 report discusses how the Department of Defense (DOD) https://www.defense.gov is studying infectious diseases.

The CRS report produces information on where research is taking place. The Defense Department’s Military Infectious Diseases Research Program https://midrp.amedd.army.mil is led by research professionals stationed at major infectious diseases research laboratories in Maryland.

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the Naval Medical Research Center and the US. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease are leading the research.

The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick MD and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring MD, are working to develop and test potential vaccines for COVID-19.

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) https://health.mil assists the federal government medical responses by acting as an information clearinghouse between relevant agencies.

Also, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) https://dla.mil works with other government departments and agencies to provide medical logistics support. This can include transporting personal protective equipment along with doctors and nurses to critical areas.

The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) https://www.darpa.mil also funds research on advanced vaccine development and medical countermeasures being applied to the current COVID-19 response. Since 2017, DARPA’s Pandemic Prevention Platform (P3) program has been working to develop a rapid response that would be able to produce relevant numbers of doses against any known or previously unknown infectious threat within 60 days after the threat is identified.

As related to COVID-19, the P3 platform is working to identify, develop, and synthetically produce antibodies that could help protect individuals from infections and more rapidly improve the health of individuals who have been infected by the coronavirus.

The U.S Army Medical Materiel Development Activity https://www.usammda.army.mil  subordinate command of the U.S Army Medical R&D Command https://mrdc.amedd.army.mil has had a long standing partnership between DOD and Gilead Science https://gilead.com to protect service members from infectious diseases.
