VA’s Rising Virtual Mental Healthcare

The Veterans Administration https://www.va.gov data showed a dramatic jump in the use of virtual mental healthcare services in March. VA’s Video Connect enables veterans to consult with their healthcare provider via their computer, tablet, or phone.

During March at the VA, mental health providers completed more than 34,000 appointments with veterans using Video Connect which increased 70% from the 20,000 appointments made in February.

The breakdown of the increases include:

  • Telehealth group therapy conducted more than 2,700 visits in March, a jump of more than 200% from the prior month
  • Mental healthcare and consultations delivered by phone rose to more than 154,000 appointments in March which was up 280% from the 40,000 appointments in February
  • Veteran Centers held more than 47,000 virtual appointments dealing with mental health in March, which was a 200% increase from February

 

According to VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, “The increase in the number of Veterans obtaining help with mental health issues, shows that the VA has made a quick adjustment to ensure ongoing support continues to veterans during these difficult times.”
