Redesigning the Child Medical Record

The Gates Foundation invites submissions to the “Records for Life” contest with the purpose to produce accurate and accessible records for children. The competition is needed to redesign children’s health records in an effort to increase accuracy and make medical records easier to interpret and use.

Many families never receive health records for their children or the records may be easily lost. In many cases, records are not accurately filled out because they are designed in a confusing way.  The Gates Foundation is looking for innovative ideas that will improve the child health record, strengthen information systems, and empower health workers and families to protect children from vaccine preventable diseases.

The contest is open to all individuals from all sectors and open for all levels of expertise. Submissions can come from individuals or teams of individuals.

The winning entry will receive $50,000. In addition, $20,000 each be awarded to the top entries for three additional categories including ease of adding new information to the card, visualization of data, and retroactive data entry. The Foundation may also recognize up to five additional entries with honorable mention payments of $10,000. Top designs may be piloted in as many as ten countries by 2018.

The RFP number is SOL1093111 and proposals are due October 31, 2013. For more information contact recordsforlife@gatesfoundation.org.
