Telehealth for Maternal Fetal Medicine

More patients in the Northern part of Alabama can now see medical specialists from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The Appalachian Regional Commission is providing $200,000 to enable UAB’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine team to see high risk patients remotely.

Another benefit of the grant funding will be to provide funding to train ultrasound technologists, which will allow UAB’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine team to not only see high risk patients but also to study high risk ultrasounds remotely.

The use of telehealth is particularly needed at the Bibb Medical Center and at the North Alabama Medical Center. Each site will be outfitted with three patient rooms to accommodate telehealth visits.

“This will create a telehealth hub for high volume sites and will enable providers based in Birmingham to see multiple patients on the same day, even if the patients are not in the same clinic,” said Eric Wallace, MD, Medical Director of UAB eMedicine.
