DLT 2019 Funding Announced

The USDA’s 2019 Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program has been announced https://www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/distance-learning-telemedicine-grants. The 2019 DLT grant program includes two programs. One program is the “Traditional DLT FOA” and the second grant program seeking applications is called “DLT Opioid FOA”.

The Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program with estimated funding of $25,000,000 has operated annually for a number of years. This year the estimated funding for each FOA is $500,000.

The “Traditional DLT” program provides financial assistance to improve services in rural areas. DLT grant funds support the use of telecommunications-enabled information, audio and video equipment, and related advanced technologies by students, teachers, medical professionals, and rural residents.

Particularly encouraged are projects that provide measurable results in helping rural communities build robust and sustainable economies through strategic investments in infrastructure, partnerships, and innovation. The goal is to achieve e-Connectivity in Rural America, harness technology, support the rural workforce, and improve the quality of life. Applications for the “Traditional DLT” FOA are due May 15, 2019.

In March 2018, Congress appropriated an additional $20 million for the new “DLT Opioid FOA” to help address the opioid epidemic in rural America. Approximately half of the funding was awarded in FY 2018 to DLT projects that had opioid treatment as their primary purpose.

Today applications received treat, prevent, and expand recovery and treatment options to avoid opioid use disorder relapse in rural areas.  The maximum funding for the “DLT Opioid FOA” is $500,000 with the deadline for applications to be April 15, 2019.

For both programs, eligible applicants may include most state and local governmental entities, Federally-recognized Tribes, non-profits, for-profit businesses, and a consortia of eligible entities.
