CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) posted “Research Grants for Primary or Secondary Prevention of Opioid Overdose” (RFA-CE-008) on March 13, 2018. Eligible applicants may include state, county, city government institutions of higher education, Native American tribal organizations, nonprofits, for-profits, and small businesses.
CDC’s Funding Opportunity seeks research data on how to prevent overdoses from prescription and illicit opioids. One approach could be to develop, pilot, or evaluate novel primary or secondary prevention interventions to help understand how to prevent overdoses from taking prescriptions and using illicit opioids.
The intent of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to:
- Build the scientific base for the primary or secondary prevention of opioid overdose
- Encourage the collaboration and partnering with scientists from a spectrum of disciplines to include public health, epidemiology, law enforcement, social work, economics, criminal justice, and the medical community to research how to prevent opioid overdose and how to access critical data systems
- Improve the state and local health department’s ability to implement and improve interventions focused on preventing opioid-related deaths
- Fund research that examines the effectiveness of strategies in areas with high overdose burden as in rural areas or where manufactured fentanyl is prevalent in the drug supply is encouraged
The estimated funding for the grants is estimated to be $15,750,000 with seven awards expected. The current closing date for applications is May 15, 2016. An applicant conference call will take place on April 10, 2018 at 3pm. The call-in number is 866-566-2180-Conference ID 10685445. It is not required, but it is recommended that applicants submit a LOI by April 12, 2018 to NCIPC_ERPO@cdc.gov
