Changes at the Defense Health Agency

The Defense Centers of Excellence (DCoE) www.dcoe.mil for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury will now be under the Defense Health Agency (DHA) https://health.mil/dha as part of the ongoing Military Health System (MHS) transformation.

The DCoE have provided the MHS with psychological health and traumatic brain injury clinical and education information since 2007. So for a number of years, DCoE has housed several centers of excellence to include the Defense and Veteran Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) http://dvbic.dcoe.mil, the Deployment Health Clinical Center (DHCC), plus the National Center for Telehealth and Technology (T2). http://t2health.dcoe.mil was also housed within DCoE.

Some changes are currently underway:

  • DHA will retire the DCoE brand but the staff will continue to do their work across DHA
  • The DCoE website with social media content will transition to http://health.mil
  • The Deployment Health Clinical Center has been renamed the Psychological Health Center of Excellence (PHCoE) www.pdhealth.mil. PHCoE will oversee the DOD Suicide Event Report, the “inTransition” program, and the 24/7 Outreach Center
  • The National Center for Telehealth and Technology will be retired but the staff will continue the work by merging with other agency staff

Other changes are going to take place. The mobile health program, telehealth program, and the training program will now be part of the new Connected Health Branch under the DHA Clinical Support Division in the Operations Directorate.

Technology efforts will transition to the web and to the Mobile Technology Program Management Office in the DHA Solution Delivery Division will be located within the Health Information Technology Directorate.

PHCoE and DVBIC will join DHA’s Research and Development Directorate. According to Dr. Richard Stoltz, Acting DCoE Director, we are consolidating our expertise to manage programs, develop resources, and perform research more effectively. There will be better opportunities for cross-collaboration throughout DHA and this will help improve and sustain operational readiness.”
