Army Issues Grant Notice

Department of the Army (USAMRAA) https://www.usamraa.army.mil posted the grant announcement titled “Medical Simulation and Information Sciences (MSIS) Toward a Next-Generation Trauma Care Capability: Foundational Research for Autonomous, Unmanned, and Robotics Development of Medical Technologies”, referred to as the “MSISRP FORwARD Award”.

The USAMRAA posted the grant notice (W81XWH-17-MSISRP-FOR) on September 26, 2017 with $2,600,000 estimated funding for the awards to find new approaches to expand next generation trauma care capabilities. The closing date for applications is February 05, 2018.

This award will be funded for the first time in FY 2017 to support basic research to increase the knowledge and understanding that will enable the future development of novel autonomous and/or robotic medical systems to care for wounded soldiers and patients through breakthrough exploratory research. The vision is to eventually use limited or absent medical care personnel or personnel with limited skills to care for wounded soldiers and patients.

Research is needed to develop plausible approaches and advanced concept designs using biologically inspired cognitive computing models, machine learning, AI, soft robotic semi-autonomous/autonomous resuscitation concepts, and advanced applications of information sciences. Other exploratory research is also needed towards advancing the state-of-the-art in the delivery of forward resuscitative care at the point of injury.

Medical robotics research is also needed to come up with novel ideas, and approaches to further develop medical robotics and real-time tele-presence capabilities that will be used to explore the machine perception for tele-robotic semi-autonomous and autonomous trauma care to be used in remote and dispersed geographic settings.
