HRSA Looks Ahead to FY 2018

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) https://www.hrsa.gov within HHS has forecasted about 40 funding opportunities for Fiscal Year 2018. This includes about 765 expected awards and nearly $2 billion in potential funding to go to cities, states, and local community-based organizations.

The forecasted HRSA grants focus on programs related to Health Professions, Healthcare Systems, HIV/AIDS, Maternal and Child Health (MCH), Primary Health Care Health Centers, and Rural Health.

For example, Forecasted Grants Notice HRSA-18-084 titled “Maternal and Child Health Data Resource Initiative” was posted on June 29, 2017 with an estimated total program funding of $750,000. Eligible applicants can be nonprofits and private institutions of higher education.

The proposed grant will support MCH programs and partners to help access and effectively utilize national, state, and community-level data. The data will be used to inform MCH policy by publishing MCH data and then be able to provide related technical assistance and training

The estimated post date for this MCH grant notice is September 15, 2017 with the applications estimated to be due November 14, 2017. For additional information, email Sylvia Sosa at ssosa@hrsa.gov.

HRSA’s forecasts help to increase the pool of grant applicants which in turn can increase the opportunities for increased competition. Allowing applicants to identify funding opportunities sooner gives them a head start on planning, allocating resources, evaluating processes, and coordinating key partnerships. The additional time can result in higher quality applications which can result in more effective programs and potentially better health outcomes for medically underserved areas and populations.

However, forecasted HRSA grants are based on the agency’s best estimates and are subject to change. Also depending on available funds, some HRSA-forecasted competitions may be cancelled or new competitions may be added.
