China’s Tech & ICT Sector

IDC https://www.idc.com, an IT consulting firm, reports that China’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) market is one of the most dynamic market sectors in China’s economic boom. IDC expects this market to reach USD $844 billion by 2020.

In July, the U.S Commercial Service of the Department of Commerce www.trade.gov/cs helping U.S companies sell their products and services worldwide, published their guide on “China-Technology and ICT” that discusses the progress made in selling technology to that country.

China is integrating ICT technologies in order to push forward the develop of industry sectors such as mobile internet, cloud computing, Big Data, Internet of Things, and other emerging technologies that are expected to result in the rapid development of intelligent terminals along with communication services.

Industrial big data and the industrial internet are two major efforts in demand in China. Also, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are the leading emerging technologies China is developing. Technology-based cooperation and market opportunities are predicted to be abundant in 2017.

Leading sub-sectors include:

  • Semiconductors and semiconductor manufacturing equipment—Over the past decade, China has ranked as one of the largest and fastest growing country markets for U.S. semiconductors
  • Cloud computing—China is a fast growing market for global cloud computing, but the country does present serious challenges for U.S cloud providers. Regulatory restrictions, some aspects of governmental decision-making, and local competition makes China a problematic market
  • Smart City Development in China—The use of information technology to solve urban problems in China is not a single industry but an emerging collection of new technologies cutting across many industries that rely heavily on technologies such as cloud computing and big data analytics

China’s first Cybersecurity Law designed to promote national security is expected to have a large but yet unknown effect on the development of the ICT industry as a whole. China continues to introduce new laws and measures related to the Cybersecurity Law for public comment in advance of future implementation.
