Future DHA Funding Possibilities

Defense Health Agency funds are not yet available for the DOD  Psychological Health/Traumatic Brain Injury Research program (PH/TBIRP), http://cdmrp.army.mil/pubs/press/2017/17phtbipreann. However, information is being provided via a pre-announcement on possible future details. The final announcement is expected to be posted March 2017.

A few of the focus areas projected in the pre-announcement for DOD PH/TBIRP include:

  • Developing and/or evaluating treatment strategies for TBI sequels including but not limited to pain, cognitive deficits, exertion-induced symptoms, and dizziness
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of clinically feasible rehabilitation technologies
  • Investigating rehabilitation interventions

DOD PH/TBIRP will support a clinical trial to advance evidence-based practice for treatment of TBI with pain, sensory sensorimotor and/or cognitive comorbidities. Maximum funding for $5 million is scheduled to be made available for the trial.

In addition, funds for DOD’s Vision Research Program have not yet been appropriated http://cdmrp.army.mil/pubs/press/2017/17vrppreann. The full announcement is due to be posted on www.grants.gov March 2017. This research program is anticipated to have a major impact on the treatment or management of visual injuries and/or dysfunction.

The maximum funding for the Vision Research Program is for $5.25 million. The funding will support a clinical trial that is expected to begin no later than 12 months after the award date and should not be used for preclinical research studies.

Also, a grant notice was posted on www.grants.gov February 10, 2017 by the Department of the Army-USAMRAA titled “DOD Precision Trauma Care Research Award” (PTCRA) (W81XWH-18-DMRDP-PTCRA). The grant notice estimates total program funding for the award to be $29,200,000 will direct the Defense Health Agency (DHA) to increase the use of “big data” to establish an understanding of military disease and injury.
