A recent report issued by Rock Health http://rockhealth.com, a California-based digital venture fund, depicts the growth in consumer adoption and use of digital health tools. The survey questioned over 4,000 consumers and shows a growing adoption of tools that includes wearable technology, EHRs, and telemedicine.

Of those surveyed:

  • 22 percent used video-based telemedicine in 2016
  • Most popular forms of telemedicine were the use of phones (59%), email (41%) and text messaging (29%)
  • 20 percent have asked for or downloaded a copy of their EHR in the last 6 months
  • 30 percent of telemedicine visits are self-pay compared to visits covered by insurance (11 percent) and employers (10 percent)
  • 44 percent of consumers tracking their health using an app to track physical activity and 31 percent tracked their heart rate
  • Nearly a quarter of Americans own a wearable up from 12 percent in 2015
