Initial MHS Genesis to Roll Out

Navy Vice Admiral Raquel Bono, Director of the Defense Health Agency www.health.mil/dha speaking at the AFCEA Bethesda Maryland Chapter Meeting on Health IT Day 2016 http://bethesda.afceachapters.org, explained that military members have to be ready to go anywhere in the world on short notice.

Vice Admiral Bono pointed out, “Interoperability starts within military hospitals and clinics. If we can’t move to greater interoperability within military hospital walls, it’s going to be a lot harder to go beyond hospital walls.”

She told attendees from the Department of Defense www.defense.gov, Veterans Administration www.va.gov, HHS www.hhs.gov, plus many others involved in the health IT space, “The commercial-off-the-shelf system called MHS GENESIS is a single integrated medical and dental EHR for use across the Military Health System www.health.mil/dhms.The system is being rolled out starting February 2017 at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington.”

The roll out schedule was updated to provide additional time for the DOD Healthcare Management System Modernization program and for industry partner, Leidos so that Defense Health www.leidos.com could expand the capabilities included in the initial deployment.

Deployment at additional inpatient facilities in the Pacific Northwest may start as early as June 2017. This effort now incorporates additional capabilities planned for release later in the deployment schedule with full deployment targeted for 2022.
