Developing Physician Leadership

Moderating the September panel discussion “Developing Physician Leadership in the Movement to Accountable Care” at the CAPG Colloquium 2016 www.capg.org, Robert Pearl MD, Chair of the Council of Accountable Physician Practices http://accountablecaredoctors.org, said “Healthcare in the future must be led by physicians knowledgeable with leadership skills to help physicians find the right solutions and find the best way to manage effectively in the 21st century.”

Philip Oravetz, Medical Director for Accountable Care at Ochsner Health System www.ochsner.org  explained how his organization has stressed the importance of having the right leadership in place to manage in difficult times such as when Katrina hit New Orleans.

He explained how the Ochsner Leadership Institute (OLI) provides free professional education for all Ochsner leaders. The goal is to better prepare leaders to confront challenges, seek opportunities, and ignite enthusiasm around best practices in healthcare.

The goal is to introduce new Ochsner leaders to management related policies and programs that are needed to ensure success.  Each year a set of required courses are given with the expectation all leaders will obtain a minimum of 40 hours per year in leadership professional development.
