The Buffalo Institute for Genomics and Data Analytics (BIG) www.buffalo.edu/genomics.html a University of Buffalo program is a key component of the Governor of New York’s $100 million initiative to transform the State into a national research center for genomic medicine.
BIG recently signed a $1.48 million contract with Garwood Medical Devices LLC (GMD) with plans to create 40 new jobs in five years. GMD participating in the START-UP New York program, is developing a new class of programmable electrical stimulation devices with integrated sensor and communications technologies.
The goal is to enable unprecedented treatment for chronic wound healing, bone growth and peri-prosthetic (implant) infections, while simultaneously enhancing quality of life by enabling patient mobility and decreasing the need for clinician intervention. As part of the agreement, BIG will provide $1.48 million in technology and resource support to GMD.
Wayne D. Bacon Chairman and CEO of GMD, said, “We are very excited to have established a unique relationship with the university by licensing their patented technologies and collaborating with the team to bring our novel devices to market.”
Edward Furlani will lead the research and development team to study the device process, modeling and design, prototype fabrication and characterization, software communications, high performance computing, and bioinformatics.
Garwood will hold a press conference and investor reception in Buffalo in early September to introduce the public to their technology platform and strategic initiatives. For more information, call 716-881-2997.
