The Department of Commerce’s National Technical Information Service (NTIS) www.ntis.gov published a Federal Register Notice June 16th announcing a new Joint Venture Partnership (JVP) opportunity focused on improving access, analysis, and use of federal data. The JVP may require investments by partners but may provide a revenue-sharing opportunity.
Since 1960, NTIS has widely disseminated federal science and engineering information and data largely through their database of more than three million publications in 350 subject areas. As technology has evolved, NTIS has increasingly focused on providing online data and services. The new JVP data program will be used to accelerate that trend.
The NTIS goal is to improve access, data interoperability, search, or use of federal data and data services to drive innovation. Some of the JVP activities could include:
- Improving data and data sets
- Creating suites of products, platforms, and services that meet the needs of businesses, government agencies, plus others
- Enhancing data discovery, usability, interoperability, standards, analytics, and forecasting
Following review of the proposals, NTIS will select multiple well-qualified private sector IT and data service providers based on criteria detailed in the Federal Register. The selected companies or organizations will then be available to partner with NTIS on data-related projects funded by other federal agencies in support of their specific missions or through fees for the use of data services.
