The US Ignite program a national effort originated by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) led by the National Science Foundation (NSF) www.nsf.gov along with other federal agencies, promotes the development of next-generation applications for ultra-fast programmable networks.
NSF has released Solicitation (NSF 16-553) www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16553/nsf16553.htm titled “US Ignite: Networking Research and Application Prototypes Leading to Smart & Connected Communities.”
The solicitation focuses on two areas:
- Focus 1—To encourage the development of application ideas and prototypes and to explore new uses for high-speed networks that will enable Smart & Connected Communities in the future as well as novel networking and application paradigms
- Focus 2—To do fundamental research in networking technology and protocols that will further both the capabilities and understanding of gigabit networking infrastructures in order to meet current and future application demands
The anticipated funding amount is $10,000,000. Focus 1 proposals may request up to $600,000 for up to three years and Focus 2 proposals may request up to $1,000,000 for up to three years. The proposal deadline is June 14, 2016 with 12 to 14 awards are expected to be made.
