Army Tech Ready for Licensing

The health and fitness industry tries to provide the best technologies and features to help athletes train in the right zone and duration for best results. So far, the ability to determine core body temperature has been largely unavailable due to inaccurate sensors and the variations between skin temperatures.

An accurate estimate of core body temperature is valuable for occupations where heat stress and heat illness are risk factors. However, there is difficulty in directly measuring core body temperature so a practical solution was developed.

In most applications, a person’s initial core body temperature can be assumes to be 98.6 degrees at the person’s resting heart rate. At that point or an alternative starting point, the technology called ECTemp ™ invented by Mark J Buller,  utilizes a mathematical process to calculate the change in core body temperature based on heart rate data.

Field testing has demonstrated accurate temperature estimates using ECTemp even when operated 24/7 for several days. With the use of ECTemp, an athlete or worker can be alerted if and when a predicted core body temperature exceeds a predetermined threshold, thus avoiding potential health illness or undue stress,

This easy to ECTemp can be incorporated in commercial heart rate monitors to provide a value added feature in the otherwise crowded marketplace. The core body temperature can be displayed in real-time on many devices such as wrist worn displays, smartphones, or heads up displays.

The Army Medical Research and Materiel Command at Ft. Detrick is seeking partners to license this technology for their respective heart rate monitor. For licensing information, email
