On February 26, 2016, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) www.mchb.hrsa.gov within HRSA released a funding announcement to improve access to coordinated and comprehensive quality care for Children and Youth with Epilepsy (CYE). The funding will especially help CYEs experiencing health disparities living in underserved and/or rural communities.
The funding announcement titled “Strategic Approaches to Improving Access to Quality Health Care for Children and Youth with Epilepsy” (HRSA-16-055) seeks applicants capable of implementing evidence-based and innovative models of telehealth and/or telemedicine that would also include mobile health.
Technology is serving as an important tool in supporting the patient/family-centered medical home model. In most instances, the CYE’s primary care provider is the medical home which is usually responsible for coordinating the CYE’s care by connecting the primary care office to the specialist’s office.
All awardees will be responsible for initiating quality improvement learning collaboratives focused on implementing technology. Each awardee is expected to recruit a minimum of seven clinical sites to participate in the learning collaborative and implement telehealth and/or telemedicine technology including mhealth.
Eligible applicants can include any public or private entity, including an Indian tribe or tribal organization. Faith-based and community-based organizations are also eligible to apply.
The application due date is May 12, 2016 with the anticipated total funding to be $3,250.000 with up to eight grants awarded. The estimated award amount for each grant is expected to be up to $406,250 per year.
