NIHCM Foundation Awards Grants

The National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation www.nihcm.org has awarded six grants totaling more than $328,000 to support research and educational activities and foster dialogue between public and private stakeholders.

The grants include funding to help:

  • Researchers at Vanderbilt University study the prescription opioid epidemic by investigating the complications and the effectiveness of state policies from eight states
  • Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard will apply state-of-the-art machine learning techniques used in EHR data to predict which patients are likely to become high users of healthcare and which patients are likely to respond well to high- risk care management
  • Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering are going to study physician practice patterns, and how these patterns drive use of inappropriate cancer services. This study will examine the use of services for advanced cancer patients and how to reduce the use of low value services
  • A researcher at Columbia University is going to examine whether a provision in ACA has affected the process and outcomes for updating Medicare physician fees. The study will also look at whether the methods used to determine the fiscal impact of the changes are sound
  • Researchers at Brookings Institution and the University of Connecticut are going to study how trends and correlations concerning quality in nursing homes as reported is inflated
  • Researchers from the University of Chicago and Harvard will explore whether Medicare beneficiaries give their primary care physicians higher ratings if these physicians have a practice style that is characterized by providing low value services
