NIH Niche Assessment Program

The NIH Niche Assessment Program http://sbir.nih.gov/nap is designed to help small businesses jump start their commercialization efforts. All NIH SBIR/STTR Phase I awardees are eligible to apply to the Technology Niche Analyses® program provided for 177 awardees by Foresight Science & Technology located in Providence, Rhode Island.

The Niche Assessment Program provides market insight and data that can be used to help small businesses strategically position their technology in the marketplace. The program can help small businesses develop their commercialization plans for their Phase II application, and be exposed to potential partners.

The program helps to develop clinical products to include devices, drugs, biologics, and therapeutics, as well as help to develop software, educational, and multi-media behavioral science products. The program is also appropriate for companies seeking strategic alliances, investors, and/or immediate customers.

Companies receive help to assess:

  • Needs and concerns of end users
  • Competing technologies and competing products
  • Competitive advantage of the SBIR/STTR-developed technology
  • Market size and potential market share
  • Barriers to market entry
  • Market drivers
  • Status of market and industry trends
  • Potential customers, licensees, investors, or other commercialization partners
  • Price customers are likely to pay

The 177 slots in the program will be filled on a first come, first served basis. For those with multiple awards, only one project per company will be accepted for the program.
