VA’s Research to Help Veterans

The Veteran’s Administration’s Health Services Research & Development (HSRD) program at their Center for Informatics, Decision-Enhancement, and Analytic Sciences www.hsrd.research.va.gov/centers/ideas2.cfm is involved in post-deployment health using population management approaches to help veterans reintegrate into the community.

The center is focused on:

  • Studying Medically Unexplained Syndromes (MUS) in returning veterans
  • Developing and implementing automated surveillance systems to track persistent symptoms and other health problems in returned combat veterans
  • Assisting clinicians help veterans in the Amputation System of Care by providing point-of-care service
  • Building predictive models to enable early interdiction of returned combat veterans at high risk for homelessness
  • Studying health and social factors that contribute to reintegration challenges and successes

In addition, the Center for Health Information and Communication located in Indianapolis www.hsrd.research.va.gov/center/chic.cfm is helping healthcare professionals and veterans on the use of newly designed tools. One of their goals is to develop and test health IT-based tools to streamline data collection and integration. Also, the VA center is working to integrate patient-specific data and information with clinical knowledge that will help veterans with patient-centered decision-making.

Lastly, the VA’s rural health program is working to design and implement informatics tools to improve access to community support resources and to improve care coordination for veterans receiving specialty telehealth care.
