Agreement to Co-Develop Mobile App

Partner’s Center for Connected Health www.connectedhealth.partners.org has signed a co-development agreement with Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. www.daiichisankyo.com, a pharmaceutical company from Japan. The plan is to create a mobile app to serve as a coaching platform for patients with atrial fibrillation who have been prescribed oral anticoagulation therapy.

The purpose for the mobile app is to support patients living with atrial fibrillation by improving patient adherence and compliance to medications as well as fostering feedback loops to connect the provider to the patient.

“Over the years, our research collaborations with industry have been focused on using connected health strategies, including mobile technologies, sensors, and remote monitoring to improve patient engagement, behavior change, and to support healthier lifestyle choices. We are pleased to collaborate to help patients with atrial fibrillation,” said Kamal Jethwani, MD, Corporate Manager for Research and Innovation at the Center who will oversee the development program with Daiichi Sankyo, Inc.

The Center has created and deployed mobile technologies in a number of patient populations and care settings. The Center’s research team is going to conduct innovative clinical studies to test the effectiveness of the mobile health technologies in various clinical applications. The trials  will include medication adherence, care coordination, pain and chronic disease management, and prevention and wellness.

According to Joseph C. Kvedar, MD, Director for the Center for Connected Health, “Our work with Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. signals an important shift in the role of mobile and connected health. By leveraging ubiquitous mobile technologies, we can help providers to engage patients in new ways to provide disease education, motivation, reminders, and other medication compliance.”

He adds, “Our research has demonstrated that mobile health tools, including apps and text messaging programs are effective means to engage patients in their care, by supporting healthy behavior change and overall patient engagement.
