NIBIB’s Small Grant Program

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) housed within NIH is interested in receiving applications for small grants where the science is focused on the development and clinical translation of new existing technologies.

The NIBIB is interested in technological studies that enable fundamental biomedical discoveries across a broad spectrum of biological processes, disorders, and diseases with a potential for direct medical applications.

In most instances, technology development will occur in a vacuum, but the technology will have a target medical application. However, sometimes, a technology-based application is so closely aligned to a specific disease or organ system that the research should be assigned to another NIH Institute.

Some of the program areas within the NIBIB small grant program are interested in developing:

  • Sensors for in vitro diagnostics, noninvasive monitoring, and implantable devices
  • Medical simulators for surgical training, surgical robotics, and devices for minimally invasive surgeries
  • Software and hardware for telehealth studies that have broad applications as well as early stage development of telehealth technology with specific focus areas
  • Drug and gene delivery systems and devices to enable the integration of biosensing with controlled dosage delivery

For additional program areas, go to www.nibib.nih.gov/research/scientific-program-areas. To get started, it is suggested that you email William Heetderks, MD, PhD, Director, Extramural Science Programs at heetderw@mail.nih.gov or call 301-451-4772 to provide a brief description of the proposed project. For inquiries on technologies related to imaging systems, email Richard Conroy, PhD at Richard.Conroy@mail.nih.gov.
