Jonathan Bush, Co-Founder and CEO of aetnahealth has written a new book titled “Where Does it Hurt? An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Fixing Health Care”. As a featured speaker at Health Datapalooza 2014, he said, “For a revolution in healthcare to happen, new business models need to be established along with new payment models and new technologies to give patients more control over their care. This will help to improve the physician-patient experience, provide more choices, power, and information at far lower prices.
He recalled how his days as an ambulance driver in New Orleans, his experiences as an Army medic, and how his experience as an entrepreneur helped him launch a startup in San Diego. At that time, his team created a software program that became athenahealth, a cloud-based service company that today handles EMRs, billing, and patient communications for more than 47,000 medical providers nationwide.
The book explains how:
- Government regulations control over priced incumbents and slow the pace of innovation
- Focused profit-driven disrupters chip away at the dominance of hospitals by offering routine procedures at a lower cost
- Digital startups are equipping providers and patients with new apps and technologies to access more health data
- Informed choices about healthcare will enable a more humane and satisfying healthcare system to emerge
Bush’s plan calls for Americans to not only demand more from providers, but individuals also need to accept more responsibility for their own health in order to make hard choices. In short, Bush said, “Take back control of an industry that is central to our lives and economy.”
