Transformation Lab Launched

Last August, Intermountain Healthcare launched their new Healthcare Transformation Lab at their home base in Salt Lake City. To show what can be accomplished, Intermountain displayed the “Patient Room of the Future” at ATA 2014 held in Baltimore May 17-20. All of the ideas for the exhibit and the display were developed in the Transformation Laboratory.

“It was a monumental task to bring the patient room of the future to Intermountain Healthcare” according to both Frederick Holston, Intermountain Chief Technology Officer and Dr. Valdes, Medical Director of Intermountain Telehealth Services.

The patient room is a place where clinicians, family members, and patients can collaborate and work together to achieve better outcomes. The new room allows clinicians and family members to have face-to-face high definition video calls with the patient. The patient is then able to control their environment from their hospital bed, including adjusting lighting and temperature, ordering food, or even streaming movies.

Other highlights of the Patient Room of the Future provide:

  • Glasses-free 3D technologies to extend telehealth capabilities
  • Advanced telehealth solutions in the patient’s room and multi-camera use in the ICU
  • Laser technology that ensures children won’t fall out of their beds
  • eVisit solutions to allow patients to do live visits with doctors from their home
  • An invisible, tiny chip to alert caregivers to life threatening changes in a patient’s vitals
  • A wristwatch that reminds caregivers to wash their hands.

Sotera Wireless is the company that the Transformation Lab has partnered with to bring wireless patient monitoring to Intermountain. The product called Visi Mobile is a platform that changes the patient experience. From the Visi Mobile platform, clinicians can collect real-time vital sign data on their patients, including ECG readings, temperature readings, non-invasive continuous blood pressure monitoring, sPO2, and respiration rate.
