Collaborating on Two Initiatives

Children’s Medical Center and PCCI, a non-profit research and development firm both located in Dallas are working together on two initiatives to provide information sharing as related to children’s health.

The first project will focus on children with chronic asthma which is the third leading cause of pediatric hospital readmissions nationally. PCCI is building predictive analytic models to help identify children with risk factors indicating a high likelihood for future asthma crises that could lead to a hospital encounter.

According to Summer Collins, Children’s Medical Center Vice President, predictive modeling can be used to assess key information within the EMR in real-time and identify asthmatic children with higher risk factors allowing healthcare and social services providers to proactively address treatments.

Children’s and PCCI are also collaborating on developing a virtual network of information exchange between pediatric healthcare and social services providers to use the exchange to house a central source of information to monitor health issues involving children. The network will be fully compliant with health information privacy regulations and available to families who choose to opt into the network.

“By electronically linking the various professionals who provide care and social services, each person in an individual child’s support system has the opportunity to coordinate services with other providers and develop team-based approaches to support the health and well-being of children.” according to Collins.

He added, “If a child’s prescription has not been filled, the providers working with that child can coordinate the approach to care and identify underlying reasons for missed appointments and refills.”
