Cognitive Systems Research

IBM along with four universities are going develop cognitive computing systems similar to IBM Watson. The study of artificial intelligence technology will help human experts make complex decisions involving extraordinary volumes of fast moving data.

IBM and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), MIT, New York University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will study enabling technologies and methods for building a new class of systems so that people will be able to interact with “Big Data” in this new era of computing. IBM foresees that the initial university collaborators will help lay the foundation for a “Cognitive Systems Institute” to include universities, research institutes, and IBM clients.

“With the explosion of information and the advances in semantic data tools, we are excited to participate in this collaboration to bring the best of human and computing capabilities together in this new era of cognitive systems,” said Selmer Bringsford, Professor and Head of the
Department of Cognitive Science at Rensselaer.

The initial research topics include:

  • Rensselaer—Researching advances in processing power, data availability, and algorithmic techniques can enable the practical application of a variety of artificial intelligence techniques
  • MIT—Examining the need for socio-technical tools and applications to boost the collective performance of moderate-sized groups of humans engaged in collaborative tasks such as decision-making
  • CMU—Studying how systems should be architected to support the natural interaction with all kinds of information to support complex human tasks
  • NYU—Studying how deep learning will impact many areas of science where automated pattern recognition is essential

Earlier this year, NYU established an Initiative in Data Science and Statistics that aims to harness today’s mass amount of data and with that in mind, NYU has created a Center for Data Science at http://cds.nyu.edu.
