The University of Notre Dame https://www.nd.edu has announced that the University received a gift for $20 million from Douglas and Diana Berthiaume to support the Berthiaume Institute for Precision Health https://precisionhealth.nd.edu.
The focus is on developing tools to understand variations in human health at the cellular level in order to prevent and treat disease through personalized therapeutics. The Institute’s researchers are investigating a wide range of health problems. This includes cystic fibrosis, antibiotic resistance, ovarian cancer, PD, kidney disease, heart disease, and COVID-19 related conditions.
The researchers are working to understand the molecular, cellular, and environmental factors underlying each person’s health, particularly those from underserved populations and to ensure that new discoveries, data, and technologies are shared equitably.
According to the university, the gift helped Notre Dame faculty members secure more than $20 million in additional funding, primarily from federal sources. The Notre Dame faculty is also working closely with a network of corporate partners, including Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Merck & Co., Genentech Inc. and AbbVie Inc. on high priority research projects.
