NIH Reissues Funding Notice

On March 31, 2022, NIH posted the reissued Funding Opportunity Announcement (PAR-22-145) “Leveraging Health IT to Address and Reduce Health Care Disparities”. The funding will also examine the impact of Leveraging Health IT to improve patient-clinician communications.

Health IT is considered an important for addressing challenges in healthcare associated with Social Determinants of Health (SDoH). The goal is to capture and integrate standardized measures of demographic data and SDoH data in EHRs to improve outcomes for populations that experience health disparities and also provide preventive care, population health management, and disease management.

NIH’s National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) mentions telehealth as a special interest and seeks ideas on:

  • Evaluating telehealth policies on access to care
  • Discuss the impact of telehealth care delivery models on quality of care, health outcomes, healthcare utilization, patient self-management/decision-making, and costs
  • Address the use of interventions to address the challenges, including SDoH and health literacy
  • Enable interoperability of health IT tools (e.g., mobile apps, wearables, and other devices) with EHR systems to support high and low resource clinical settings, healthcare systems such as pharmacy chains with providers
